There is a latest trend of directors turning actors but usually the norm is for the actors who also try their hand at direction. There have been several notable actor-directors like Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt and Rakesh Roshan who have found considerable success in both. But most of the actors cannot do justice to their role behind the camera. However, here are some actors who have shown some promise or have the potential to do something interesting as the captain of the ship bur unfortunately are not doing more work or not enough. The actors selected are the ones I am most excited about and have at least made one film or short film or something to showcase their talent.
THE LIST NOT IN ANY SPECIFIC ORDER.
The man is probably the most obvious person on the list. He gave us the unforgettable Taare Zameen Par and we have been just waiting since then for the man to give us something new. His unique cinematic sensibilities and quest for perfection makes him the perfect man for the job. He has been talking of getting back behind the camera soon but with him one can never know.
No one had thought that one would see such a sentimental, soft romantic film to be the debut film as a director for the man known for his macho image on screen. Ajay Devgn surprised one and all with U Me aur Hum. The film may not have had found much success and it definitely had its problems but I for one had loved the film. It was a sincere attempt and a touching film which was able to transcend from just being another romantic film. More than anything else I saw a tremendous potential in Ajay as a storyteller and his aesthetic abilities. The trailer of his next film Shivaay finds him more at home with the genre and the visuals look exciting.
Her last feature film as a director was Phir Milenge which was a decent film. But the film that me about her as a director is Mitr (2002). She definitely has a knack for effectively telling intriguing stories and one wishes she does more work.
I will never understand why this man has not made another movie. He made the amazing Prahar way back in 1991 and since then has mostly been seen in front of the camera.
His first and only directorial debut has been the obscure Everybody says I am Fine. If the film is anything to go by then the man has a unique voice which needs to be heard more often.
KUNAL ROY KAPOOR
Before becoming a well know actor, Kunal had directed the much under-appreciated ‘The President is Coming’. He definitely is a fresh new young talent who needs to do this again.
She has made one of the best films pertaining to the Gujarat riots in Firaaq. There is a news of she coming back with her next somewhere in the next year and I cannot wait to see what she chooses to do this time.
KONKONA SEN SHARMA
She has already made her first film which is yet to commercially release but she is one of the most cerebral modern actresses and it will be interesting to see what subject she chooses and what she does. Her short film Naamkaran shows some serious directing chops.
I agree that the man has made the unpardonable Mausam. But at the same time he has amazed us too many times as an actor to deserve a second chance. I refuse to give up on him and am sure that if given good material he can be as brilliant in direction as well. Maybe if the next time he hires a better script writer.
This funny actor from Go Goa Gone has really impressed with his stint with YRF’s Bang Baja Baraat and other short films available on Youtube. His story telling acumen, understanding of humor and the grasp on middle class milieu can translate into some interesting stuff on the big screen.
